Hey you, you talking to me? Well, if you’re posting on Facebook, you probably are, because despite what you’ve heard, every single age, gender and interest group definitely still loves it, but the audience for every social media platform is different. Let’s talk about who you should be targeting.

Hey there, wise guy. I’m Xaña Winans, CEO and founder of Golden Proportions Marketing, one of the most experienced dental marketing companies in the country. Today I want to talk to you about some important differences in audience demographics on the big four in social media, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube.

With 2.3 billion users worldwide and 230 million users in the United States alone, Facebook is still king. You can target nearly every kind of person here from adults to seniors. 77% of adults on Facebook actually have a college degree or higher, so don’t be afraid to go a little more technical in your posts. They can take it. Users spend close to an hour a day on here, so longer posts and longer videos are absolutely encouraged.

A whopping 71% of Instagram users are under the age of 35, meaning this is a great place to target young families and young professionals. If you want fee for service patients, you’re going to be thrilled to learn that 60% of Instagram users make over $100,000 a year or more. If you want to talk about big ticket cases, Instagram is your place. Think implants, Invisalign, veneers, smile whitening and more.

If you’re not on Pinterest professionally, you might want to join. Pinterest reaches an impressive 83% of women ages 25 to 54, which gives us our target sweet spot, moms. This audience is actually looking for inspiration for big life moments. For example, if you want more veneer cases or smile whitening, target wedding searches. If you’re looking for young families, target back to school. This is your chance to get really creative with your targeting.

Want to sell dental implants? An amazing half of all internet users over the age of 75 are on YouTube. What a perfect opportunity to create an informative but not gory video about how dental implants can replace those very uncomfortable dentures. Now remember, YouTube is all about entertaining and informing, so make your videos fun.

By now, you’ve seen how important it is to match your dental social media post to your social media platform. You don’t want to take the exact same post and just slap it on every social media account that you have day after day because it isn’t going to be relevant to your audience. If you target your post to your audience, before long, “You talking to me,” is going to become, “Hey, can I talk to you?” If you’re new to social, be sure to download our free guide, Social Media Marketing Ideas for Dentists.
