5 Tips for Better Dental Blogging


Blogging can seem about as easy as nailing Jello to a tree, but it’s a great way to keep your dental website highly visible when patients search for a dentist in your area.

Keep it simple

Keep your posts simple. You may be an expert when it comes to dentistry, but your patients are probably not. Using highly technical jargon will make your blogs seem more like a boring college lecture than a conversation. Try to write as if you’re talking to your best friend over lunch, or gossiping with your mom about your sister’s husband. Make it simple enough that an eighth grader (on the honor roll) could understand it easily.

Mix it up

It’s alright to blog about things that aren’t directly about dentistry. Think about spotlighting team members, honoring the young Picasso who won your monthly coloring contest, or bragging about the local little league team you sponsor.

There’s no idea too zany for a blog post. Just keep it PG-rated (or tamer) and reflective of your practice, and you’ll be in good shape.

Looks are important

White space, white space, white space! Nothing drives traffic away from your site faster than a huge wall of text. (Except maybe a barrage of pop-up ads.)

To create some breathing room for your readers’ eyes, use headings to break up the text, add some bullet points or numbered lists, vary sentence length, and limit paragraphs to three lines.

If your post is lengthy, use one or more images as eye candy to keep your reader going.

Catch them at a good time

Trust me, unless you only want insomniacs or vampires for patients, avoid posting between the hours of 8 p.m. and 9 a.m. You want to post and share your blogs at high web-traffic time. That means from 1:30 – 3:30 on weekday afternoons. (Yes, that’s when people are slacking off at work and browsing the web.)

Stick to a schedule

Blog on a schedule. It’s smart to develop a blog calendar where you select topics ahead of time and always post on the same day (or days) of the week—especially if more than one person will be contributing to your blog.

It’s a good idea to prepare a couple months’ worth of posts before you get started. That way, if things get crazy busy or you just have a creative block, your blog will still keep running smoothly.
